Easter in Ukraine: Traditions, Symbols, and Family Celebrations

Preparing for the Big Day

Easter preparations in Ukraine begin long before the holiday itself. The week leading up to Easter is known as Holy Week, and each day holds special significance. It’s a time for cleaning, baking, and reflecting.

Holy Monday: The start of the big clean! Families sweep, dust, and scrub their homes from top to bottom. It’s believed that a clean house brings good luck for the year.

Holy Tuesday: Laundry day. All linens and clothes are washed to start fresh.

Holy Wednesday: A day to finish household chores and prepare festive outfits.

Holy (Clean) Thursday: This day is all about purification—both physical and spiritual. Ukrainians not only bathe and put on clean clothes but also bake the iconic Easter bread, known as “Paska.”

Holy Sunday: Easter Celebration!

🌿 Willow Sunday: A Symbol of Health and Prosperity

One week before Easter, Ukrainians celebrate Willow Sunday (known as “Verbna Nedilya”). On this day, people gather in churches to bless willow branches—specifically, pussy willows, not weeping willows. After the service, families bring the blessed willow branches home.

A unique tradition follows: family members lightly tap each other with the willow branches, saying, “It’s not me hitting you, it’s the willow. In a week, it’s Easter. Be as healthy as water, as wealthy as the earth.” This playful ritual is believed to bring health, prosperity, and good luck.

The blessed willow branches are kept in the house as a symbol of protection and blessing for the entire year.

🍞 Paska: The Heart of the Easter Table

Paska is not just any bread—it’s the centerpiece of the Ukrainian Easter feast. This sweet, aromatic bread is often decorated with intricate designs made from dough, such as crosses and braids. Each family has its own cherished recipe, passed down through generations.

Baking Paska is a family affair. The process is surrounded by rituals, including prayers and keeping silence to ensure the bread rises well. Once baked, Paska is carefully placed in a basket alongside other festive foods and covered with a beautifully embroidered towel.

🧺 The Easter Basket: A Symbol of Abundance and Blessing

The Ukrainian Easter basket, or “velykodny koshyk,” is a beautifully arranged assortment of symbolic foods that families take to church to be blessed. Each item in the basket holds special meaning:

  • Paska — Symbolizes the Resurrection and the heavenly bread.
  • Eggs (krashanky or pysanky) — Represent life, rebirth, and the renewal of nature.
  • Sausage and ham — Signify abundance, health, and well-being.
  • Cheese and butter — Reflect the gentleness and sacrificial nature of Christ.
  • Salt — Represents the connection to the earth and prosperity.
  • Horseradish — A symbol of strength and health, often linked to the bitter sacrifice.

The basket itself is decorated with a hand-embroidered towel, symbolizing purity and protection. Some families also include homemade treats, decorated cookies, or even small bottles of wine. The entire arrangement is carefully prepared and carried to church, where it is blessed by the priest. After returning home, the blessed food is shared during the Easter meal, spreading the sense of togetherness and gratitude.

🐣 Pysanky and Krashanky: The Art of Easter Eggs

No Ukrainian Easter is complete without colorful eggs. Pysanky are elaborately decorated eggs created using a wax-resist technique. These eggs are considered protective amulets and are often kept in the home year-round.

On the other hand, Krashanky are simpler—boiled eggs dyed in one solid color. Red is the most popular shade, achieved by boiling eggs with onion skins. The red color symbolizes life and rebirth.

Ukrainians also create "motanka"—egg-shaped dolls wrapped in thread, symbolizing protection and the renewal of life.

A Cozy Family Breakfast

After returning from church, the family gathers for a festive breakfast. The meal begins with a traditional egg-cracking game. Family members take turns knocking their colored eggs against each other. The one whose egg doesn’t crack is said to have good fortune for the rest of the year!

Paska is cut and shared among the family, symbolizing unity and shared blessings. The meal continues with a variety of traditional dishes, including roasted meats, cheeses, and homemade preserves.

🌱 Preserving Traditions for the Next Generation

Easter in Ukraine is not just about customs; it’s about family bonds and keeping traditions alive. Parents teach their children how to make Pysanky, bake Paska, and prepare the Easter basket. It’s a way of passing down not just recipes and crafts, but also values and a sense of belonging.

Why Ukrainian Easter Feels So Special

The essence of Ukrainian Easter lies in its blend of faith, tradition, and family togetherness. It’s a time to pause, reflect, and celebrate the renewal of life with loved ones. In every carefully decorated egg, every slice of Paska, and every joyful laugh around the table, you can feel the warmth and coziness that define this beautiful holiday.
